History
The Algonquin was a latecomer to a glorious tradition that began in the early 20th century when the fabled theaters of nearby Asbury Park – the St. James, Savoy, Mayfair and the Paramount – dazzled audiences.
Each neighboring municipality – including Manasquan – would eventually have its own cinema sometimes equipped as the Algonquin was – for live theatrical shows.
Constructed in 1938 by the Arcadia chain, the theater got its name as a result of a contest among local residents proud of the fact that the town bore an Indian name that reflected its heritage as an Indian settlement.
The theater’s name honored that heritage, much like the large wood carving of a native American that once graced the lobby.
In 1974, it became part of the Walter Reade theater chain which operated it until 1980 when the more modern multiplexes began to draw audiences away. In 1990, it was purchased by Frances and John Drew of Manasquan, who restored it and converted it into a performing arts theater with an expanded stage, fly tower, orchestra pit and dressing rooms.
The Drew’s renamed it the Algonquin Arts Theatre and opened the doors to ticket holders in 1994.
Since the founding of Algonquin Arts and the reopening of the Algonquin Arts Theatre, more than 500,000 theater-goers have experienced a broad spectrum of the performing, visual and media arts close to home.
Among companies that have graced the stage are: The Moscow Ballet; the Actors Studio of New York; The David Dorfman Dance Company; The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center; the Paul Taylor Dance Company and the New Jersey Youth Theatre.
